Archetype Building Design Studios helped a young family to transform their home into the perfect home for their busy lifestyle.

The family had purchased a semi-detached cottage in their ideal location on a peaceful tree-lined street close to Centennial Park in Randwick. Unfortunately, the home was an unrenovated complex of small rooms that were cramped, dark and cluttered. Their home was stuffy and hot in summer and icily cold in winter. The interiors were dated and lacked modern conveniences. 

​Archetype Studios helped them to transform their home into an open plan, light-filled, spacious and functional home.  By bringing together the old and the new building design elements Archetype Studios created a unique, character-filled home that truly reflects the needs and personality of the family.

A seamless contemporary extension transformed this character filled semi-detached home into a generously proportioned sanctuary for family living and entertaining.

Sustainable Design Features

Operable skylights with double glazing fill the hallways and stairwell with natural light, reducing the need for electric lighting during the daytime.

LED lighting was used in 100% of the new lights installed in the home. LED lights contain no lead or mercury and use 85% less energy than regular halogen and incandescent lights. 

Natural wool insulation is used throughout the extension in the walls and roof area. Reducing heat penetration in summer and heat loss in winter the family rarely needs to use any air conditioning and the home stays cosy in winter. An added benefit of natural wool insulation is that it removes contaminants from the air.

The home was designed to maximise cross ventilation with carefully placed windows and doors and openable skylights. The air movement and cooling breezes help with passive cooling in Summer.
